Acid etching is often recommended online as a cheap way to prepare concrete before coating a garage floor. The problem is simple: acid etching does not replace mechanical grinding. For a professional garage floor coating to last, the concrete needs the right surface profile, clean pores, and a properly prepared slab.

Acid etching is the process of applying an acid solution to concrete to create a rougher surface. The idea is that the acid reacts with the cement paste on the surface and opens the pores enough for a coating to stick.
That sounds good in theory. In real garage conditions, it is not reliable enough. Most garage floors are not perfectly clean, perfectly porous, or perfectly uniform. They may have oil stains, tire residue, curing compounds, paint overspray, dust, sealers, moisture issues, soft concrete, or previous coatings.

Coatings need a surface they can bond to. Acid etching may roughen some areas, but it does not create a consistent profile across the entire garage. Dense concrete may barely react. Contaminated areas may not etch correctly at all.

Garage floors take abuse from oil, road grime, tire residue, brake dust, dirt, moisture, and chemicals. Acid may react with exposed cement paste, but it does not reliably remove everything that can block adhesion.

Concrete can have weak surface material called laitance. Acid etching may react with the surface, but it does not remove weak layers the same way grinding does. If laitance remains, the coating may bond to a weak layer instead of solid concrete.
